Q: WiFi drops - anyone else?

Hi all

I know there are lots of posts about WiFi dropping but I haven't found anyone asking quite the same thing. I have tried the various solutions online to no avail.

For me, I'll be browsing the web and suddenly I'll click a link and it won't load. Chrome states "Resolving host".

I've checked and ping isn't working either - I'll ping 8.8.8.8 (Google DNS server) and get no response (timed out).

To resolve it, I turn off my WiFi from the menu bar, and turn it straight back on. Then connectivity is restored immediately.

I have this problem no matter which router I connect to (I have two in my house which helps for testing). Tried fixed IP, manual DNS entries, new "Location" etc etc. Even tried changing some router settings such as channel or encryption type.

I'm at a loss as to whether this is a software problem, or a hardware problem that I should get resolved under warranty (runs out in August). Unfortunately I only had the laptop a short time before I upgraded to Yosemite and I don't remember if I had the problem before I did so.

It drives me crazy, I at least have the workaround but in some browsing sessions I'm turning my WiFi on and off every 10 minutes. I shouldn't have to do this on a £1600 laptop.

Thank you for any replies/pointers or "me too" responses. It will help me decide what I need to do.

    Good day RussT1983,

So it sounds as if when you are on the web you at random intervals lose the ability to load web pages, is that correct?

I would suggest at this point that you follow the suggestions in this article so that we are certain your router has the correct settings and updates -

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

    Unfortunately this hasn't helped.

The network has two wireless access points. Neither maintains a connection, it just drops to "resolving host" in the Chrome status bar. Wifi off and back on - connects straight away.

I have another laptop and a desktop, and my iPhone, all of which use the network for hours at a time without issue.

My hunch is that there is a compatibility issue between the Virgin Superhub router and the Macbook Pro, but I can't figure out what. Even when using the other AP the symptoms occur. It's not a DHCP issue as I've tried with a fixed IP. It's like the Superhub suddenly stops recognising the Macbook or something, but I'm not a networking guru so can't think why that might happen.

I'm racking my brains but I'm sure I never have this issue connected to any other WiFi network. I know using my iPhone as a hotspot works fine.

    Hi Russ,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities. Due to the nature of the issue you described you may find more information by using another one of Apple's support resources - https://getsupport.apple.com/GetproductgroupList.action.
