Problem importing mini DV tape

I have many old mini DV tapes which I want to digitalise, mainly for safe keeping but also potentially to perhaps edit at a later date. However, my primary aim is to create a back up of all the precious memories on the tapes onto the computer. I have an old working Sony DCR-PC3E camcorder and am using an iMac with OX-X Yosemite. I would have liked to import directly into iMovie but this doesn't work for me because it automatically splits the video into clips randomly. I have looked into this on the internet and gather that (particularly with Sony camcorders) iMovie will split the video whenever it detects the slightest shake/sudden movement etc thinking it is a new scene. I have tried linking these fragments (although this would be impossible to do on a large scale anyway) but there is a drop out which is noticeable. I then spent many hours (weeks!!) trying to get around this problem and looking on the net and came up with the idea of purchasing Quicktime 7 pro. I was so excited that this seemed to capture the video without splitting into tiny clips when I did a test on a few minutes of video and I was then able to successfully import this into iMovie (does this lose quality?). However, Quicktime now keeps stopping in the middle of importing and saying that there has been a media change. This is at random in the middle of a scene with no apparent reason! I am at my wits end!! I would like to import the tapes with the minimal loss of data if possible although right now I would just like to be able to import them whatever!

Please please help - I am getting desperate!

That's great news. I have downloaded Vidi and tried recording one of the tapes and hurray - success!! However, although the footage was not split into loads of clips and Vidi recorded the whole tape without stoping, when I played the some of the footage back (using Quicktime) there is a loud 'blip' or sort of sound short buzz every now and then on the sound. As if some sort of interference. Any ideas? I don't know if the sound has not recorded properly or the tape is somehow damaged but I am going to do another tape and see if I get the same problem and also check the original tape on the camcorder itself. I presume the audio is recorded with no loss too? I must say, once the video is on my iMac screen it doesn't look brilliant in quality but I guess that I am now so used to high def! Also: can I just import the footage into iMovie - will that compress quality if I start editing? Many thanks again for your help with this - I have spent so much time over several months (as a novice!) trying to get to grips with it all. Not sure why I never actually submitted a question before!

Sound blips? If they're not actually part of the recording--in particular at media change points--I'd suspect an old DV tape and/or dirty heads inside the Sony. For the latter, get a head cleaning tape.

iMovie is a moving target, as are media formats especially in recent versions of the OS. iMovie used to employ DV as its native editing format, but I haven't kept up with iMovie since the glorious iMovie HD (6.0.3) about a decade ago. I don't know how a more recent version of iMovie will handle imported DV. I'd say test a small sample and compare.

Thank you for your help. I ordered a head cleaning tape which definitely helped as a tape I tried had a picture which was starting to break up. The head cleaning tape sorted this out however the sound blips are still there. On further investigation I found that this was on any of he tapes I imported and when I listened very carefully to the tape playing in the camera itself I could just about hear the same blips from the camera itself. I actually now think it is the camera at fault so I intend to borrow another one to see if that helps. However, I now have a method of importing the tapes onto the computer without being spilt into clips so thank you very much!
