Mail app resending old emails

When I open the Mail app and load new messages, it also re-sends messages that were sent from my phone. They seem to come up as being in the Outbox rather than the Sent folder. It's really frustrating as people think I am strange sending the exact same email a couple of days after they have replied!! Why does this happen, and what can I do to stop it?
