What leads you to believe your computer has a virus?

In the last week I keep getting very distateful pop-ups, which I've never had before. Today I have activated my Firewall and FileVault so I'm hoping this will do something. Don't know why they weren't on before. Other than that is it advisable to have anti-virus software and if so, what would you suggest?

The other reason I forgot to mention before, is that I keep getting certain words appear underlined and in capitals with a symbol next to them. When I hover over them it says "ad by MacVs". They appear online and even on my bank
statement like this one has just appeared.

Thank you so much for your help and instructions. The adware medic has identified the issues and my mac is now clean. The instructions were straight forward and although I had to go through the process twice, it has work and I can't tell you how relieved I am. I have also found out where it came from.
