Connect to Canon c9065

I'm trying to connect a macbook pro with 10.9 to a Canon c9065 using UFRII drivers. The printer is being served by a Windows Server 2008r2 machine, but Windows machines are capable of connecting directly via IP. I've followed the instructions to connect the mac via IP and it reports a connection error and asks if I want to create the printer anyway. Of course it will not print.

Is there a step that I'm missing here? A couple of months ago I connected a Yosemite machine to the same printer, so I'm thinking that this should work.

OS X Mavericks (10.9.5)

The connection error can be a result of the protocol being selected when creating the printer. Since you managed to get the Mac running Yosemite to work then I suggest you check how the C9065 printer was created on this Mac. To do this, open System Information (Applications > Utilities) and select Printers in the left column. If the C9065 is the only printer on this Mac then its information will be in the right pane. If there is more than one printer, select the C9065 in the top right pane to see its information in the bottom right pane. What you are looking at is the entry labelled URI. If you connected via the Windows share then it will show smb://windows_server_name/printer_share_name

If it shows lpd://ip_address or socket://ip_address then you have created a printer with a direct connection to the copier - assuming ip_address is the IPv4 address being used by the C9065. If something else is shown then please reply with what is shown.

With this information you can then create the same printer on the Mac running Mavericks.
