Until just a few days ago both my iPod shuffles first and second generation would appear in my finder and in my itunes. They now show on my finder but not in my itunes. They also appear on the desktop. any suggestions as to what I need to do

I have iTunes 12 and do not see the icons where they were last week. he items mount on my desktop. and appear in my finder. Last week it would say 2 devices and when i clicked they would appear. This week nothing? Any other ideas. Both seem to be charged and I have tried different USB ports. thanks for the help it was appreciated. Still need more if possible.
