I am getting the message "iTunes could not sync calendars to the iPad because the iPad disconnected."

In attempting to sync my iPad Air with my iMac using iTunes I keep getting an error message telling me iTunes cannot sync calendars to the iPad because the iPad disconnected. I've tried it with the USB cable and wirelessly with the same result. I see my iPad on the top left menu of iTunes so I know it's connected but it can't seem to get through the syncing process without this error. OS X 10.10.3, iOS 8.3. iTunes 12.2.1.27

iPad, iOS 5.1.1, Mail
