Q: My iphone isn´t working. How long will my back up on icloud remain intact?

My iphone can´t be switched on. I wanted to find out if there´s a time limit regarding icloud back up? How long will the data remain even though I am not able to access it?

    It will remain forever.

What have you done to resolve the problem of the phone not switching on? What to do if your iPhone or iPad will not turn on

There is no time limit, as long as you don't close your account.

Whatever issues you're experiencing with your iPhone, search this forum for a solution, or post it.

Thank you for the information about icloud. My iphone only shows the blinking apple logo when it is connected to a charger otherwise there´s only the black screen. I have tried to restore it through itunes but an error message is received. I have also tried replacement of battery but the problem still remains. I read through forums and found the two possible solutions which I have already tried out without success.

Thank you for your reply. It helps to know the icloud back up has no limit. I can now try and search further for a solution without any time constraint regarding icloud.

People are here to help. What error message did you receive when you tried to restore? Next, who did the battery replacement? If it was not Apple or an Authorized Apple Service Provider, then you have risked your device. If you did it yourself, then you may have permanently damaged the phone and will not be able to recover. Without knowing the problem, other than not being able to switch on, it would have been hard to recommend a fix. But, if you did the work yourself, you have voided any post-warranty support from Apple. They will no longer fix the device.

The error message was as follows:

The iPhone ¨iPhone¨ could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (3004).

There are no Apple stores or Authorized Apple Service Providers in my country and so there is no warranty or post warranty support. I did not replace the battery myself, however, I have to make do with the services available in my country.

See: If you see Error 3194, Error 17, or 'This device isn't eligible for the requested build' in iTunes - Apple Support

This error means one or more of the following:

    • You are trying to install a version of iOS that the device does not support. For an iPhone 5 the ONLY version you can install as of today is 8.3. And the ONLY way to install it is to let iTunes find the correct version by clicking Restore iPhone in iTunes. You should not download an installer (.ipsw) file yourself.
    • Your phone is jailbroken
    • Your computer was used to jailbreak some iOS device in the past, and its network database was corrupted by the process

It can´t be any of the issues you mentioned since I let iTunes find the correct version by clicking Restore iPhone. Secondly, I bought a factory unlocked iPhone from an Apple store in the U.S. Thirdly, I used my own computer (which was brand new at the time of purchase) to restore iPhone through iTunes and so I know it is not corrupted through such a process as no jail break has ever been carried out on my personal computer.

It is very possible then that the battery replacement did something else to the phone. Something could have gotten shorted out or damaged during the replacement and that is what is causing part of your problems. It could be anything. And as Lawrence has said, you should still check out all of the things in the link he provided, which includes checking the hosts file on your computer and others. If none of that works, then return to the vendor that replaced the battery.

Yes, I have tried the suggestions in the link you sent. Thank you for providing the link. I have tried the following:

    • Restoring from another computer. This did not work.
    • I have reset the hosts file and tried to restore my iPhone once again but this did not work either and this time around I received another error message: The iPhone ¨iPhone¨ could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (21).
    • I temporarily disabled my security software while restoring my iPhone through latest version of iTunes but this did not solve the problem.
    • I also disconnected my wireless router and used an Ethernet cable to connect my computer directly to the modem. This also did not work and I received the same error message: The iPhone ¨iPhone¨ could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (21).

OK, a different error now. As it happens with different computers your phone may have a hardware problem, and that problem may (or may not) be related to the battery replacement that might have dislodged something in the phone. Well then it´s likely a hardware problem as indicated by the error message. Thanks for your help and advice in the matter.
