10.4.8 and Apani Nortel Contivity Client 3.4

I upgraded to 10.4.8 and it has broken (partially) my Nortel Contivity Client from Apani Networks. I have called them and they said the problem is related to the OS update and they have not been able to duplicate it, but have had calls from other users reporting problems. They claim to have made Apple aware of the problem, but state that Apple said they have not received very many calls with the complaint and thus it is not a priority. I am running OS-X 10.4.8 on a PowerBook G4, 1.33 GHz, 1 Mb RAM and the latest release of the Apani Client, 3.4. The client seems to work 90% of the time over an Ethernet network connection and 10% of the time over WiFi. I can connect to the Contivity Box, but I cannot reach any resources (web pages both internal and external, Microsoft Remote Desktop or shared drives). So I guess my questions are:

1. Anyone else having this problem?
2. If so, did you notify both Apani and Apple?
3. Does anyone know a solution?

Thanks in advance for any help/advice.

Greg

My VPN client software stopped working when i upgraded to 10.4.8, and Apani is aware of this issue. If anybody here is familiar with the past fix for Photoshop CS2 running 10.4.6 when you were unable to save files without the app unexpectedly quitting, someone posted a fix on MacFixIt telling to replace the AppleShareClient.framework, AppleShareClientCore.framwork and the AppleShare folder which fixed the issue. So i was wondering if a similar fix would be possible to replace some files and(or) folders to make this work just like it did in 10.4.7. Apani takes a long time to fix these kinds of issues and i would hate to downgrade everyone that has a VPN account to 10.4.7 which requires an archive and install. I wish i knew exactly which file on 10.4.8 i could replace using the 10.4.7 files. If anybody knows how i can start to fix this issue i would appreciate it very very much. At least im not the only one.

All -

I just picked up a Verizon Wireless EVDO card for my MacBook Pro. I've used the Apani client for nearly 2 years with no issues.

I'm on Apani 3.4. Mac OS is 10.4.8.

Anyway, the VPN client works fine over a wired or wireless (WLAN) connection. Using the Verizon connection works fine, if I start the VPN, all networking then fails.

I just talked to a support guy at Apani who said this is a KNOWN ISSUE. Seems apple (or someone) changed the way that PPP connections are done in the latest builds of MacOS. This has broken the way that Apani leverages a PPP connection for either a Wireless data card OR even standard modems.

He said it was a known issue, and expect to have the fix available BEFORE the end of the year.

Greg,

Just to add to your comment - my company uses over 1000 mac machines and we access our corporate network via a Nortel Contivity switch.

We've upgraded some of our MacBooks to 10.4.8 and the 3.4 Apani client no longer functions when passing through a NAT firewall (basically any time our people are out of the office using Wireless in hotels or LANs).

We've contacted Apani who say that Apple are aware of this issue - but can give no fix time.

Currently we've left a large number of these machines at 10.4.7 to deal with this, but as part of our review of hardware we're looking to move to a Windows platform now, as we can't have our senior executives using a platform (even as good as OS X!) where critical functionality is so easily broken, and the support from both Apple and Apani is so appalling.

I hope there'll be a fix for this within the next 7 days - or the CEO (who's not happy about his inability to use his laptop for corporate email) will sign off on Dell laptops instead ...

Cheers,
Rob.

I installed the Apple security update that was released today (11/28/06), Security Update 2006-007, and my client now seems to be working properly. I have tested over two different WiFi networks and can report success on both. I will keep testing and if something changes, I will let the list know, but for now, things seem to be working properly. The Security Update does not indicate that it fixes the issue specifically. Information here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304829

But, like I said, it seems to be working now. Please post responses if you are having success after installing the update.

Thanks,

Greg
