Is support.me a scam or real virus support for apple products?

Whilst doing some google searching my browser suddenly started talking to me and warning me I had contracted a virus. I thought this strange as I hadn't opened any attachments or visited anything dodgy. The pop up window gave me a number to call for assistance in fixing my computer. I called but was very unconvinced by the 'support' person on the other end. She instructed me to force quite, upon which I say a safari programme not responding. I shut everything down and restarted my computer as per her instructions. She then told me to go to support.me and download something to fix my computer. At this point i got very suspicious and did a phishing google search on support me. A few warning posts on forums came up. So I told the woman I didn't trust her or the situation enough to continue so put the phone down rather than go to support.me. I feel vindicated but am still worried by whatever caused the pop up window in the first place. should i be? do i need real apple support to fix this? or did i catch the scam in time and I'm safe to carry on?

The phone call to us this morning sounded like it came from a busy call center in India. Calls like this before (1 or 2 a month) have always wanted to 'fix' our windows OS. This time they knew we have a Mac and told me to use Safari to to go to <www.support.me> at which point I searched that using a private window and Ixquick which gave me this discussion. I told them my computer showed they were a scam and hung up.

identifying the system and browser is built into HTML so there is no magic to anyone identifying any of those.

It can also be pulled off in 5 lines of Java scripting.

www.support.me is a legitimate site for LogMeIn users which is a staple of many IT departments and IT hobbyists. The problem is this and other legitimate terminal connection software can be for less than legitimate purposes because of it's simplicity and the legitimacy of the developers who distribute it and make it free.

As you said you got a popup saying that your computer has a virus, that is a scam. Don't call that number they are trying to send you real viruses disguised as computer virus protection programs.

support.me is part of LogMeIn Rescue, which is a legitimate software for remote viewing and control of computer. Since it is a legitimate software it has privacy features so your computer can't get viewed when you don't want it to be. But don't download it if you got the support number from a scammer.

Support.me is part of LogMeIn Rescue which is legitimate. However, LogMeIn is software to allow remote access to your computer, and the people who were trying to utilize support.me were scammers and you should not allow them access.

Yes. Since you didn't allow them remote access, and it doesn't sound like you gave them any information like credit card numbers, phone numbers, Apple ID, etc. you are fine.

See A Browser Pop-up has Taken Over Safari to learn more about this scam.

(Note that I am affiliated with that site, and some pages contain ads).

Yes I concur

It just happened to me

there was a pop up and a phone number to call

1(855) 482-2632

after on the phone and having downloaded 2 programs (LMI Rescue which turned to Support-LogMeInRescue and join.me)

I was suspicious since apple has never had me download a program to do any trouble shooting.

luckily for me the file wouldn't open, he asked me to go to preferences and allow downloads from anywhere. this made me weary.

So I asked who he was with and he told me LMI RESCUE mac technical support.

I asked him then to hold for a second and opened Chrome to do a quick search. The guy hung up within 15 seconds.

SCAM

hope this extra info helps

I can't find this link and I'm afraid I did allow access to my computer. They did 'fix' the virus, I think. all the ads have stopped popping up. Originally, I got a message 'from' Safari saying to call this number for tech support. It went to LogMe in and then to support.me as they suggested. They have continued to answer my phone calls when I called back.. I've changed all my passwords, etc. and alerted my card. Could you send the link again please?

The same happened to me.

I really don't know a lot of computers so I followed her instructions.

I downloaded the app and allowed her access.

She showed me how slow my MacBook is working and told me that I have a virus on it.

She convinced me that she could fix it within 4-6h.

She asked me for my e-mail address so she can sent me the bill for that service.

It would have cost 250$ and monthly 19,00$ for the following support.

I told them that I don't have that much money.

So tried to convince me but finally she quite out of my computer and now everything is working fine.

I deleted the app I downloaded.

But should I be still concerned? Should I bring my laptop to an expert to fix it?

Can I make transactions on my computer or will they know my credit card number then?

Is support.me a scam or real virus support for apple products?
