iPad shows 9GB used for photos yet I use iCloud

There is lots on the web re this but I cannot find an answer that helps.

If I use iCloud (I pay for 200GB) then why do my iOS devices show lots of space occupied by photos. Save for photos in messages (few) I would have expected the value to be zero.

I do not 'take' photos using my iPad - at all!

Thank you for your advice

The 200GB of storage that you purchased for iCloud is for backups. It has nothing to do with off-device storage. You cannot upload content and photos to iCloud and then remove them from the iPad. iCloud is not a storage in the cloud solution. It is for iOS backups only. Why you are showing 9GB of storage on your iPad is beyond me if you have never taken photos with your iOS devices.

IF you have taken photos with the iPad in the past, this may work for you. This was re leveled in a discussion in May by txforever.

I managed to get rid of the phantom usage. Restoring iPhone and resetting the phone settings/data do not work for me.

I had to move the Date on my phone earlier by 1,2,3 months and found the phantom photos in the Recently Deleted Folder. Next, I deleted the photos manually from the Recently Deleted Folder and the usage got freed up from my iPhone.

I Know you are right and I am wrong but I thought iCloud was the means of keeping iOS and OS X devices in synch. On an iOS device I realise photos are partially downloaded in order to save space. Therefore could the 9gb I have used relate to those photos I have downloaded in full resolution. That being the case how do I revert such photos to a lesser grade of download in order to save space. Also what do web sites mean when they speak of iOS devices having a sliding scale of space used for photos which seems to contradict the concept all are held in the cloud. Thank you for your patience.

Confirm your Settings > Photos & Camera > I presume iCloud Photo Library is turned on.

Below that you have a choice to: Optimize Your iPad Storage or Download and Keep Originals.

The Optimize storage selection manages dinamically the amount of storage used for your images depending on how much free storage is available on your device. It does not mean that no images are stored locally. It does mean that as your storage becomes more limited, Photos will start reducing the quality (size) of the images stored locally, until, eventually, only tiny thumbnails will be stored on the iPad.

This is all done automatically and you don't need to "supervise" this. Unless something goes wrong :-/

Images stored in iCloud Photo Library are always stored at full resolution. Only iDevices and Macs have the option to use Optimized files.
