Hello there. I wonder if it's possible to use the (old 6 knob) apple remote control with photos app on iMac 2009 with yosemite...
I know that front row is history, but the remote still works with eye tv, itunes and maybe more, but I just had a photo show and was very dissapointed that I did not find a way to use the remot for that....
Maybe I missed a trick?

You are telling me Yosemite Photos is not built for IR for play/pause/forward/backward??
Such basic functions? even more when iTunes still supports it???

No, you won't be able to use the IR remote with Photos. Photos was not designed for it as all new Macs do not have the IR capability. Only older apps with that capability can be operated with the IR remote.
plus Yosemite still supports it. Pairing and enabling/disabling function in the settings works perfectly fine.
Yes. There's no need to add that capability since Macs have not included IR input for some time now. 2011 was the last iMac to have it; 2012 for the last MacBook Pro; and early 2009 for the Macbook. So Apple is not going to provide that capability in new apps that they develop of which Photos is one because new Macs don't support it.
Apple Remote is compatible with iPhoto. For Photo, user can use some utility like Remote Buddy or use very simple utility that convert Apple Remote key to standard keyboard keys (arrows, return, space and esc). this utility can be found on SmartGUS.
To a 70+-yr-old 2011 and 2012 is like yesterday. My iMac from back around then is working very well on Yosemite (or so it seemed) until I had to switch to Photos. To me, some of the things I see happening to a Mac seem like backward steps, certainly Photos vs iPhoto (I really liked using iPhoto). I used to speak out boldly in support of using a Mac. Recent experiences involving Macs have diminished that enthusiasm.

Surely can't be a hard thing to re-enable in Photos.

So how do people with newer Macs control their slideshows and advance, reverse or pause their presentations?
With a wireless keyboard I guess. Or a 3rd party bluetooth remote.
