Q: Power button not responding after performing SMC
My Mac Air was purchased mid 2012
It has been running really smooth after a recent (2weeks ago!) update to Yosemite (yes I know I updated really late!). After this update, my Mac became unusable! Fan running at extremely high speed even when no app is on at all and it became reeeeeaaaaally slow. And it takes a few minutes to respond to ANY click...
Once the Mac air is turned on or woken up, it runs smooth for about 10 seconds, and that's when the fan starts running at crazy high speed....
My Filevault is turned off, can't find any other way to resolve this. so I thought to try reset SMC as suggested in some of the posts.
To reset the SMC:
- Shut down the computer.
- Plug in the MagSafe or USB-C power adapter to a power source and to your computer.
- On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
- Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
- Press the power button to turn on the computer.
However after performing the reset , the power bottom does not respond at all - basically I can't perform step 5 at all. The first time it happened was at night so I went to sleep and strange enough the next morning when I tried the power bottom again, it worked. I didn't think that I did anything wrong during the reset but I went to take a look at several YouTube videos and tried performing SMC reset again for serveral times (10 times?!). However I am stuck at step 5 EVERY time - no respond of power button until the next morning...
i really need some help here :,( Why SMC reset doesn't work on my Mac, and if it really doesn't work, what can I do to speed up the Macbook... Otherwise I really would have to buy a new one
