Not all devices show Capsule connected to the Internet, why?

I have an AirPort Time capsule used as a wifi source for iPad, 2 iPods, Mac mini and Macbook Air. The Airport utility shows the mini is connected to the internet via the capsule but the iPad and the MacBook Air says the internet is disconnected. What do I do to ensure this is connected for all devices using the wifi?

If you have a pure modem.. or a bridged modem router .. the TC will act as a WAP only.. and just one IP can be delivered to the network.. the first device to join gets it.. nothing else will.


So I think you have the setup wrong.


Tell us exactly what modem router you have??

Make and model please?


What model is the TC? A1xxx from the base.


How is it working in the network.. ?? Is it DHCP and NAT or Off (bridge mode). ??

Thanks for the reply.

The thing that has me stumped is that the exact same setup ceased working about a week ago with no change to any of the settings on any of the devices to my knowledge.


I am in a retirement village and we get a feed from a server in the management office via the phone line so we are allocated an IP address. This is extracted by a small modem, Motorola I think, supplied by the management, with two ethernet ports. The TC is plugged into this via ethernet.


From further notes I presume the issue is due to the TC being set to bridge mode according to the Airport Utility. The TC is an Extreme, no number on base.

We have found with power outage or something the Airports do occasionally sort of bounce their settings.. If it is in bridge it is wrong.. it must be in router mode.. but your setup might cause double NAT problems.. unfortunately that is the nature of the beast and nothing you can do about it.. you are effectively sharing a network connection with many other people.


What I need is a couple of screenshots.. this is easy to do.. on the mac hold down Command + Shift and then number 4. Then place the mouse pointer in one corner of the item on the screen.. hold the mouse button.. drag to the opposite corner.. release the mouse.. a screenshot will be saved on the desktop..of just what you want.


Open the airport utility and take a screenshot of the Airport.. whatever it is.. with the summary page showing.. ie you have click the AIrport icon.


eg User uploaded file


Post it using the little camera on the menu area and it will allow you to select the screenshot.. this is a great boon of these discussion areas.. posting pictures are worth thousands of words as they say.


From this I can determine a lot of what is wrong.. if you click edit and also give me the screenshot of the network tab and wireless tab and internet tab.. I can work out everything.

It doesn't appear to have anything much wrong..


Please just do a reboot of everything first.. power everything off.. then restart the modem device.. followed 2min later by the TC.. then the clients.. tell me if that works.

In a computer.. open a terminal and type

traceroute 8.8.8.8

Copy and paste the result here.

The important part is in bold.. I can see that I have only one nat router.. what I am wanting to see is how many routers there are in your setup.


If you have no luck..

Just try what happens when you change from bridge.. which is what you are now.. to router..


So I want you actually to do a major change.. your current names can cause issues..


So please follow these instructions.


Start from a factory reset. No files are lost on the hard disk doing this.

Factory reset universal

Power off the TC.. ie pull the power cord or power off at the wall.. wait 10sec.. hold in the reset button.. be gentle.. power on again still holding in reset.. and keep holding it in for another 10sec. You may need some help as it is hard to both hold in reset and apply power. It will show success by rapidly blinking the front led. Release the reset.. and wait a couple of min for the TC to reset and come back with factory settings. If the front LED doesn’t blink rapidly you missed it and simply try again. The reset is fairly fragile in these.. press it so you feel it just click and no more.. I have seen people bend the lever or even break it. I use a toothpick as tool.

N.B. None of your files on the hard disk of the TC are deleted.. this simply clears out the router settings of the TC.


Setup the TC again.


Then redo the setup from the computer with Yosemite.

1. Use very short names.. NOT APPLE RECOMMENDED names. No spaces and pure alphanumerics.

eg TCgen5 for basestation and TCwifi wireless name.



If the issue is wireless use TC24ghz and TC5ghz with fixed channels as this also seems to help stop the nonsense. But this can be tried in the second round. ie plan on a first and second round of changes to fix this.. hopefully.. I will point out other steps that can be round2.


2. Use all passwords that also comply with 1. but can be a bit longer. ie 8-20 characters mixed case and numbers.. no non-alphanumerics.


Run the setup wizard and if you need to put the TC into router mode try that.. so instead of bridge the network tab must show.. dhcp and nat.

The DHCP range should be different to your current one.. default 10.0.1.x will be fine.


It should then work fine..

at which point I stopped the trace.

The TC is now allowing my MacBook Air to run on the network rather than the Mac Mini!

I'll try the complete reset tomottow as I need to do more on line work before then.

By the way the two iPods still get the internet connection fine as does a Samsung CD and wifi enabled player!

I thought I'd do an update to my current situation. I connected the Mac Mini direct to the Motorola that receives the feed from the phone line to one port and the TC to the other ethernet port. Now everything works fine including the iPad and iPods off the wireless even if the MacBook Air is also on the wireless signal from the TC. This has been going for a week or so.


I have not tried the full reset as a consequence, sleeping dogs etc, but will if it all goes belly up again.
