Q: WHY won't my computer download email at some hotels or campsites, but my iPhone and iPad will?

Every time we go out of town, my iPad and iPhone can receive email, but my MacBookPro 2011 (late) will NOT download email.  I read about IMAP vs. POP settings.  Do I need to change it on my computer?  How?  It is so annoying when people with a PC can download their email just fine, but my Mac can't.

Is it caused by my settings or by some security issue with the hotel or campsite?

Occasionally, if it does download anything, it takes FOREVER, and it will only download it by the day.  Therefore, I have to wait and wait and wait if it has been a few days since it downloaded.  Gmail sometimes works better than my AT&T email.

Also, I will occasionally see little icons...like a yield sign or a "squiggle" mark beside each of my email accounts when it won't download.  What are those, and how can I override them?

BTW, I have the latest iOS update on my computer.

Thanks!

MacBook Pro (15-inch Late 2011), OS X Yosemite (10.10.3)
