Numbers App vs AnOther

I notice Numbers is the default spreadsheet app on my iMac, however I have downloaded an open source equivalent MS Excel software which appears as an image on my iMac.If I want to open an excel file on this image..LibreOffice I have to open the Libre Office suite and open the Excel file I want from there, which gives me the file with all the functions of MS Office.

IF I were to try to open the excel file by simply clicking onto the file itself in its folder, it opens in the default Numbers app. without all the functions of MS Excel!!,

...how do I make Libre Office the default so that when I click the file it opens in Libre a Office?

iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2013), OS X Yosemite (10.10.3)

Select the file. Press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. In the Open With panel select LibreOffice as your default application for the .xls file you have. If you now click on the Change All button it will assign all Excel spreadsheets to open from LibreOffice.

Note that the spreadsheet application in LibreOffice is not 100% compatible with Excel. Excel macros are not supported, for example.
