Macbook Pro Retina Clunking Sound...Loose Part, or Normal?

Hi all,

I've seen plenty of posts about weird noises, but this one seems a bit unique...

I received my new MBP Retina 13" about a month ago and last night picked it up in such a way that it made a slight clunking/clicking noise. I investigated a bit and found that if I hold it vertically with the apple logo right-side up and turn it like a steering wheel (kinda weird/funny, I know) it makes this slight clunking/clicking sound, like there's a loose part, something sliding side to side a bit (might require a quiet room, not sure). You can also feel its just slightly. Weird thing is, if I flip it so that the Apple logo is upside down, it doesn't do it.

Naturally I'm concerned. Has anyone else noticed this? I'm hoping it's common, but feel like it won't be...

The very best way is to take it to your nearest Genius Bar - you can demonstrate and they can check/run tests if necessary. That service is free; but, since you're covered by a warranty anyway: take advantage of it. It may or may not be something that needs to be fixed.

Thanks babowa,

I figure that is the best course of action, but I'm definitely still curious if anyone has experienced the same thing.

I may open it up tonight and take a look (I have the tools), but then again I don't want to risk voiding the warranty.

As the machine is not user serviceable, you would void your warranty by opening it up. That is not worth the potential high cost of a necessary repair.

I've noticed the same with my rMBP 13" 2015. It's like something quite heavy is bumping against the sides of the body or something. You can only hear it in a quite room. I guess it's one of the batteries. Should I leave it like this or go to Apple Service with it?

My question is, why are people shaking their MacBook Pros? I have never once thought of shaking mine.

Genius Bar troubleshooting/diagnostic is free - I'd take it in for an evaluation.

Mine does not make a noise (it's a 2012) - although I do not shake it either. I treat it like any expensive and delicate electronic device should be treated: with a lot of care.

Hi, Did you figure out what this was? Mine does the same exact thing that you're describing and I have the same computer, 1 week old. Is it worth getting checked out? Or is this something they all do?
