Late 2013 iMac running slow, many 'killed' processes?

Hello all,

I have recently purchased an iMac (around a month ago) and occasionally it runs very slow and freezes up in very rare cases. My MacBook Air never does this, so it really is making me disappointed that my desktop is no where near as capable as my laptop. 😟 Rainbow wheel never was a thing for me until I got an iMac.

Here are my results from etreCheck... a lot of processes are killed?? I don't know what is going on. Any help is greatly appreciated!

You can start by reducing the amount of apps you have launching at startup/login to less than 6 apps.

Add or remove automatic items

Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Users & Groups.

Select your user account, then click Login Items.

Do one of the following:

Click Add ➕ below the list on the right, select an app, document, folder, or disk, then click Add.

If you don’t want an item’s windows to be visible after login, select Hide. (Hide does not apply to servers, which always appear in the Finder after login.)

Select the name of the item you want to prevent from opening automatically, then click Delete ➖ below the list on the right.

Stop using BitTorrent.

Reduce the amount of applications you run simultaneously as your iMac only has 8 GBs of RAM and you cannot install any more.

Ditch ALL Googlewares. They are ALL a serious resource hogs on the OS X system.

The additional benefit is that you'll stop Google from mining your data when you surf the web

https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/95319?hl=en

If you do not like Apple's Safari web browser, download, install and try Mozilla FireFox, instead.

http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox

The current, up-to-date version of FireFox is fully compatible with OS X and is regularly updated by the great developers of the Mozilla group.

I have, also, stopped using the Google search engine regularly (due to Google's privacy policies or lack thereof) and I now use DuckDuckGo as my default search engine.

You appear to be using two virtual environment softwares (VMware Fusion & Parallels Desktop). You should not be doing this.

PIck one that works consistently for you and uninstall the other. If the software has an uninstaller app, use it. If it does not, then simply drag it to the OS X Trash icon in the OS X Dock and then empty the Trash.

Make sure all all of your installed software, device drivers and web browser plugins are all up to date.

When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

SYSTEM LOG QUERIES All Messages

from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

View Show Log List

from the menu bar at the top of the screen.

Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.

Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.

Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

When you post the log extract, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the text on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

I have taken your advice of lessening the amount of applications that I have opening on start-up, and have gleaned it down to 6 items that are pretty much necessary for my computer to function as I wish. I have also stopped using Google Chrome, the only reason I was using it was for the Chromecast feature at the time, I normally would have used Safari.

As for your comments on Data Mining, I am pretty sure that what they are doing sever-side is not slowing down my machine, so lets stick to the facts not personal qualms towards Google's EUA.

Also, it says in Etre Check that my RAM is upgradable? Is that an error? Can I not add more?

I have removed VMWare from the Applications folder before I even submitted this request or ran the check. I prefer Parallels How can I remove VM's remnants scattered about my Home Folder?

Regards,

JG.

Linc,

I will be waiting for it to do it again, it normally takes a few sleep/wake cycles for it to get back into the grove of running slower than molasses.

I restarted after submitting this and no stutters just yet.

I took the advice of the other poster, as you can see in my response to him.

Thank you so much for being helpful! Some of your older posts have saved me a lot of Google work!

JG.

2012- current 21 inch screen model iMacs have no user upgradeable RAM any longer.

In these new 21 inch screen, slimline iMacs, the RAM is soldered to the iMac's logic board and is NOT upgradeable.

As far as VMware fusion goes, VMware must use an uninstaller app. Simply sending this to the OS X Trash and emptying the Trash in some cases DOES NOT remove every vestige of the application from the OS X system.

You need to visit the developer's website to find how to properly uninstall this software.

Linc,

I have been having some beachballing issues with my late 2013 iMac. Following your instructions I have pinpointed two instances of delays in the console and copied them below. Any help that you can provide will be gratefully accepted.
