Q: How can I change my photo in the User&Groups System Pref?

I would like to change the photo that comes up on the log-in screen in Yosemite (10.10.3 on a MacBook Pro 15"). When I go to System Preferences and choose the  "Users & Groups" preference, then double click on the old picture for my account, it gives me a very limited choice: Defaults, Recents, My Photo Stream, Faces, Camera, and Linked. There is no way to choose a photo that is on my Desktop. The only one of these options that would let me select my choice of photo is to put it into iPhoto. But my iPhoto 9.6 will not open with 10.10.3, and I no longer can upgrade it to 9.6.1 since it doesn't show as a "Purchase". It isn't a "Hidden Purchase" either; I've checked via iBook, and the "View Hidden Purchases" item referred to in the Support Article on how to hide or unhide purchases.

Furthermore, the System Preference tells me, under the "Faces" option that I can find a picture in iPhoto or Aperture, but it doesn't accept the new Photos; the only thing I can do from "Faces" is to cancel that choice!

So: how can I change the photo for my log-in screen?

MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2014), OS X Yosemite (10.10.1)
