Mac Pro Early 2009 CPU upgrade

Dear all,

I'm considering upgrading my CPUs in my Mac Pro dual 2.66 8 core mac to something like a dual 2.93 with the faster RAM.

I want to buy these http://www.cpu-world.com/sspec/SL/SLBV7.html but the vendor says they're only for servers. Are they wrong?

They look correct in every way to me. Correct socket type etc Can someone confirm this for me?

Many thanks,

Damon

I have to say that everything you could ever want to know about upgrades to a 2009 is in here:

http://forums.macrumors.com/forums/mac-pro.1/

Firmware, processors, "de-lidding" and of course how to get the best and faster PCIe-SSD blade there are today.

I point you there because there is a lot it. In one sense it is simple, but worth the reading and reviewing what others before have done and learned. So there is 6 years of experience to absorb. Prices are better. And MacRumors you will find single huge threads on single topic, like cpu upgrades, upgrading a 2009, what processors, and even GPU choices today.

The 2009 Mac Pro (and some other models) have a LGA 1366 CPU socket.

Stepping is the specific version of the CPU chip. For dual processors you want the same stepping on each processor

says a 5670 processor will work in a 2009 Mac Pro. I think yo have to update the EFI firmware tothe firmware for 20019 Mac Pro, I know you do for processors with more than 4 cores
