For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.

The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.

The further information area has direct links to the current and recent builds in case you have problems downloading, need to revert to an older version or want to try the iTunes for Windows (64-bit - for older video cards) release as a workaround for installation or performance issues, or compatibility with QuickTime or third party software.

Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there are also links to backup and recovery advice should it be needed.

I had a month of iTunes has stopped working on my win 7, 64 bit machine. I tried all of the uninstalling all the components in order, the copying over of the *.dll files etc, the turning off the 3D in QuickTime. and none of it worked.

Then I read the apple support articles about setting up a new library and moving over my old library file (which contained my playlists, counts etc)

This fixed it, for about 30 minutes and then it's crashed again. Any thoughts please?

OK, I'm not aware of any particular issues with Avast at the moment, but both McAfee and Norton seem to cause trouble so I think it is safe to say that iTunes and AV software are not necessarily the best of friends. You could try temporarily disabling it to see if iTunes will work properly. If so it may be possible to add exclusions for the application itself and/or the iTunes library folder.
