Q: Photos missing after switching to Photos from iPhoto

I've recently noticed that there are a bunch of old photos missing in Photos, but that are present when I open up iPhoto.

In addition, some of the albums are completely blank. As you can see in the screenshot, the second album just has an icon, but it's missing all the photos that used to be in it. They are missing entirely from the library, so it's not an issue of them just not being present in the album. I addition I've noticed there are other random photos missing. They are still there when I open up iPhoto.

- I only have one photo library

- I also recently turned on the iCloud photo library -- not sure if that has anything to do with it. I don't know if the photos were missing before I turned it on.

- I tried repairing Photos, but that didn't do anything

- The way I understand it, both Photos and iPhoto are pulling from the same library, so I can't figure out why they exist in one and not the other

- I did notice that one of the missing photos had a title that was identical to another photo in the library (IMG_XXXX). Could that have something to do with it?

Any suggestions? Is anyone else having this problem?

That is slightly different.  When you migrate an iPhoto Library to Photos, a new library will be created. Any changes you do in iPhoto will not be visibly in Photos and vice versa. But the new Photos library is sharing the original master files with the original iPhoto Library to save space. (see:  Photos saves disk space by sharing images with your iPhoto or Aperture libraries - Apple Support)

Photos may have migrated a different iPhoto Library than you are currently using in iPhoto.

Compare the names and the location of your current iPhoto Library and the Photos library.

I made no changes to iPhoto since switching over to Photos, so it's not an issue of making a change there that wasn't duplicated in Photos. The photos were present in iPhoto and in those albums when I switched over to Photos. .

Also, I only have one iPhoto library and the missing files are located in that library along with every other photo.

    Any other thoughts?

There was no backup drive with older libraries connected, when you migrated the library?

If your current iPhoto Library has all photos you want to migrate to Photos migrate it again. But repair it, before you try to migrate it.

Repair your iPhoto Library with the First Aid Tools:

    • To launch the "First Aid Tools" hold down the options-command keys ⌥⌘ while double clicking the iPhoto icon.
    • Keep the keys held down firmly until the First Aid panel appears.
    • Then select  "Repair database" from the First Aid panel and let the repair run.
    • Repeat with "repair Permissions".

To migrate the repaired iPhoto  library drag it onto the Photos icon in the Dock.

Once the library has been migrated again, check, if now all photos are showing.

If not, the library corruption may be worse and require a rebuild.

If all fails, rebuild with the trial version of iphoto Library Manager:
