after upgrading to Yosemite 10.10.3, I must often log in twice using the passcode. Other times, when I open the lid, and/or disconnect from power, it may be ready to go with a single log in. .Also, the computer has become quite sluggish. Puzzled.

From your post it sounds like you need to enter your password twice to log in at first on your computer and it is running a bit slow. I would start by booting into Safe Mode, then restart and test the issue out again:
Try safe mode if your Mac doesn't finish starting up
If it persists, I would next repair the permissions on your drive with this article and test it out one more time:
