Q: my macbook pro (mid 2009, OS X 10.9.5) has countless issues

It started when I noticed frequent crashing of FCPX, (many different kinds of crashing, i.e. the "The application detected an error that prevents changes from being saved. To avoid losing your work, quit Final Cut Pro." message, the "final cut has stopped working unexpectedly" message, and frequent kernel panics"

I recently some corrupt data and hard to start from scratch (I didn't have any time machine backups at the time), but I managed to get it kind of up and running again, but still with the same issues as before.

I did some research and found that occasionally frequent kernel panics are the result of out-of-date software, so I decided to go ahead and try upgrading to Yosemite. Here I encountered even more issues. At every attempt of downloading Yosemite, I would receive some kind of error message (that the download was corrupt, that I should restart and try again, most notably "An error occurred while extracting files from the package 'Essentials.pkg'."

I went to another thread regarding troubleshooting problems related to difficulties installing Yosemite, and found that it could potentially be a hardware problem and have nothing to do with Yosemite. In order to check for this, you'd have to use Apple Hardware Test. However, I am unable to run AHT because I purchased this computer off of craigslist, and so I don't have the cd's that some with it.

I seem to have reached a dead end in every sense.

Any suggestions (besides "purchase a new computer"?)

Yes there is; but it's all the same things that are shown in the picture under Diagnostic Reports.

The EtreCheck doesn't indicate anything and without a panic report I can't begin to even guess. Can you describe what you're doing and what happens when the mac panics?

Usually editing in final cut when a panic occurs, I can't pin it down to a specific action, but it seems to happen while either playing back a clip or moving the cursor (but it has also occurred outside of these actions).

Wait, after clicking on "about this mac", I went to "system report", then "software", then "logs" and found "Kernel Log"; it says the source is /var/log/asl.
I think it's what I've been looking for. Give me one second to post it...

The report's really large (too large to post a picture of it). I saved it as a text file but it seems like there's no way to attach it to a comment in this discussion...

    Copy and paste it.

Reading back.....Did you do the things I suggested after you posted the etrecheck report? Remove and reseat the ram, identify the make, remove the Kingston SD card, the third party mouse? It's important to remove everything non Apple to start troubleshooting a panic and it can be a long process.

Is your Adobe software all up to date?

It's too large to copy/paste (this discussion page just tells me that my response couldn't be saved)

I don't know how to remove/reseat the ram, so I haven't done that yet (looking it up now)

Could you please explain what you mean by "identify the make"?
And yes, I've removed all third party equipment, and when I click on the apple logo and go to "software update", it says everything is up to date (except Yosemite, of course).

I'm interested to know if the ram is cheap third party ram. Since you bought your computer second hand the previous user may have installed incompatible ram thats causing the panics. Improperly seated or incompatible ram is a leading cause. You should check with Adobe to see that allof your Adobe apps are up to date. You seem to be thinking that your panics are caused by Apple software when in reality the chances that a third party hardware or software is probably the cause. Of course you could also have a hardware problem but you can't run AHT because don't have original discs, which you could buy if you chose from Apple. The Kingston SD card that was inserted in the EtreCheck report could also be a cause.

It seems that we're on a wild goose chase, your best bet might be to make an appointment and take it to the nearest Apple Store or AASP and have them check ot out. They have diagnostic software thats even more in depth than AHT.

Look at the instructions posted by Linc Davis in this thread Re: window shade dims screen and must restart Also look at the panic report the OP there posted. If what you have doesn't look like that it isn't a panic report.

I followed the instructions posted by Linc Davis

I opened the Console window, selected System Diagnostic Reports under DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION, and none of the reports are ".panic" files, as Linc Davis says there would be.

Does seeing this error message guarantee that what I have experienced is a kernel panic?

Kernel panics are so frequent in final cut that I decided in order to get a report, I'd just use it until I experienced a kernel panic, and get the report directly from the following "your computer was restarted because of a problem" message:
