Need some advice.
I do not like photos. I have had to restore using time machine backups to get iPhoto back on my machine. Is it possible to update and still use iPhoto. I know iPhoto is still on my macbook, but the version of iPhoto was not compatible.
Do I have any other options?
Any help greatly appreciated.

iPhoto never left your Mac. You wasted your time restoring. It was still in the Applications folder.
V. 9.6 won't run on Yosemite, but 9.6.1 will. If iPhoto is in your Purchases list on the Mac App Store, you can get the 9.6.1 version. See Can't Update iPhoto because it is not available in the App Store

The version that was on pre update was greyed out when I opened the app folder after i updated. I could not open it. Also when I go into the app store and purchases the only option is to open iPhoto, no update option.
Trash the earlier version of iPhoto, then download it from the Purchases tab. It will be the newer version.

Just to surmise. Backup on time machine. delete iPhoto, then re download from the purchases tab. This will restore all photos on the useable version of iPhoto.

Trashing iPhoto and then redownloading from your Purchased section in Mac App Store is going to be the only way to resolve the issue, if you didn't actually "purchase" or download iPhoto from the Mac App Store and tie iPhoto to your Apple ID, then you may be out of luck unless you can find an iLife disc and reinstall an older version of iPhoto. Your iPhoto Library is located in your Pictures folder and isn't affected by deleting iPhoto. Your photos are still there.
question, so you mentioned that if you didn't purchased or downloaded iPhoto from the mac app store you are out of luck unless i get a iLife disc, so if i have neither, does that mean my pictures are completely lost 😟 Please someone help me get my pictures back
You're hopping on the end of a query from last June there. You really need to give details before anyone can help you.
What version of the OS do you have?
What version of iPhoto?
I recently updated to OS X Yosemite and iPhoto was 9.4
Go to the App Store and check out the Purchases List. If iPhoto is there then it will be v9.6.1
If it is there, then drag your existing iPhoto app (not the library, just the app) to the trash
Install the App from the App Store.

One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?
iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.
