Stop auto delete from desktop

Hello, I am new to Mac and so I don't know what is going on with this issue. When ever I save something to my desktop or make a new folder it will auto delete in a few seconds. I see a small gear in the upper right conner near the clock when the item is being deleted. What is this and how do i stop it? Thank you.
