email address as a contact name

I notice on my contact list, as I read down my alphabetic list, there are email addresses listed. They are linked to no information apart from the email. I go in and delete the entries-as the name/email/address, etc. listing is already in the contact list. Is there a setting that is generating these entries. thanks
