Q: Is Apple aware that Photos is duplicating hundreds of iPhoto pix?

I recently "upgraded" to Yosemite (the BIGGEST Mac mistake I've made in over 20 years of being a Mac user) and it told me that iPhoto will not work and that I have to use the new "Photos" app instead.

So I open Photos and it migrates all of my iPhotos into it and it has duplicated thousands of images! Two days ago I had about 8,000 images in iPhoto. Now I have over 14,000 images in Photos. One specific image which was dated October 20, 2000 has been duplicated over 200 times!

How do I remove all these duplicates WITHOUT spending any money?

MacBook Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10.3), 8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3, 500GB HD

1 - iPhoto is still in your applications folder - if you were not up to date with version 9.6.1 see Can't Update iPhoto because it is not available in the App Store and 9.6.1 works just fine

2  - migrating to Photos does not duplicate photos - since we can not see you we have no idea what you did or what happened but something is wrong

3 - probably the solution is to trash the  photos library (make a backup first just in case) and launch Photos while holding the option key down and select the iphoto library to open and migrate

iPhoto might be there. The application icon is crossed out and when I click it, it says, "In order to open “iPhoto.app”, you need to update to the latest version. The version of iPhoto installed on this Mac is not compatible with OS X Yosemite. Download the latest version for free from the Mac App Store." and it provides a button to go directly to the App Store upon which the App Store says, "Item Not Available.  The item you've requested is not currently available in the U.S. store."

I went to the link you posted in step 1 and iPhoto is not in my app store purchases and the instructions for unhiding my app store purchases do not work because, simply put, there is nowhere on the screen within the app store that gives the option to unhide any purchases.

"probably the solution is to trash the  photos library"...

Specifically, how do you trash the photos library?

"and select the iphoto library to open and migrate"

Specifically, where is the iPhoto library?

My Mac runs software update once per week so I have no idea why this thing never updated iPhoto beyond 8.1.2, especially considering that I use iPhoto at least several times per week! Seldom a day goes by that I don't have iPhoto open for one reason or another. >:-(

If you are still on iPhoto 8.1.2 then that would explain why the migration to Photos did not work correctly. You need to update iPhoto to a more current version before trying to migrate again.

I don't know what you're doing that makes you think you're "updating" your software once a week, but it's obviously not working. Log into your Mac App Store, click on the Updates tab, then click to install each listed app update.

Under the Apple menu there was a "Software Update" option. I could run this manually, but had it set to run every Sunday. Sometimes it found updates, sometimes not. I use iTunes about as frequently as I use iPhoto. After launching iTunes, it would be totally normal for the occasional message popup saying, "There's a new version of iTunes" with a button to click to update it. In fact, I have lots of apps that look for an update upon launch and notify me of an update. Obviously this has not happened with iPhoto for some time now. Why? I have no idea.

This is a screenshot of my App Store purchases.

Some third-party apps check for updates; some check only if you set a preference. Some don't check, period.

The "Software Update" option under the Apple menu disappeared a long time ago. Its function has been taken over by the Mac App Store (MAS) app. Check your prefs for MAS.

Launch iPhoto and iTunes and select Check for Updates manually from their app menus. Your versions might be so old that the MAS updates have not yet kicked in, but if you truly are on Yosemite 10.10.3, as your footer says, this should not be the case, unless you're using multiple Apple IDs to log in.

I recently did the same migration, direct from Lion. My if was not up to date. It migrated, and the total number of images seems about the same, though Photos is pretty awful, anyway (utterly destroyed most all of my smart albums).

So I do not think it is the result of an older iPhoto library (as I said, I did mine yesterday, from the same version of iPhoto).

Your iPhoto library is within your home directory, inside Pictures.

You can get a current version of iPhoto that works by calling support for Photos, and explain that you need the 9.6.1 iphoto version for a new Yosemite install. If you have smart albums in your pervious iPhoto that used ratings at all, they are toast and impossible to rebuild (like photos with a star rating within a range). Photos is faster, that is the only plus I see for it (cloud storage for images is not a good option unless you have a tiny library, IMO).

I just converted an iPhoto 8.1.2 library to Photos and the conversion, though slower than converting an iPhoto 9 library, went thru and I have exactly the same number of photos and videos as I do in the original library.  There was no issue with the conversion.

That tells me that there must have been some problem with your 8.1.2 library that caused the bad conversion.

Do to have a backup copy of your 8.1.2 library?  If so restore it to your Desktop and drop it onto the Photos icon in the Dock.  See how that conversion goes.

I upgraded from Mountain Lion (or perhaps Lion, I don't remember) so until a few days ago the Software Update was available under the Apple menu and ran once per week. I am unable to launch iPhoto for the reason stated above... it pops up an error window saying, "In order to open “iPhoto.app”, you need to update to the latest version. The version of iPhoto installed on this Mac is not compatible with OS X Yosemite. Download the latest version for free from the Mac App Store."

When I go to the App Store and look for iPhoto it pops up an error window saying, "Item Not Available.  The item you've requested is not currently available in the U.S. store."

I can assure you with 100% certainty that I have 10.10.3 Yosemite installed... http://s22.postimg.org/896xslsg1/yosemite.png ... and I'm not using multiple Apple IDs to log in.

And did you read the link I provided

Get iPhoto 9.6.1 if you didn't update before OS X 10.10.3

If you didn't update your 9.x version of iPhoto prior to updating OS X Yosemite to 10.10.3, you cannot update the app through the App Store. Support for iPhoto was dropped with the release of Photos in Yosemite 10.10.3.

While you still cannot update iPhoto, you can re-install the app which will download the current version.

Note that you must have iPhoto version 9.x for this to work. If you never purchased the 9.x version of iPhoto, you will not be able to update it to the Yosemite version.

First, go to the App Store, Purchases tab, and make sure iPhoto is in the list of purchased software. It may be hidden, so check for that: Hide and unhide purchases in the Mac App Store - Apple Support. If it is not in your Purchases list, this will not work, so don't bother continuing.

Just as a precaution, copy iPhoto from your Applications folder onto an external disk or USB stick and eject that drive.

Delete iPhoto from your Applications folder. Make sure there are no disks mounted that have a copy of iPhoto on them. Empty the Trash.

    • Make sure no other users have iPhoto open in the background. It is best to have all other users logged out.

I ended up having to Restart before I could clear iPhoto from the App Store memory (it was still showing Update on the button in Purchases).

    • If it is still showing as Update, try searching Spotlight for iPhoto. There may be a copy on a mounted external disk that it is identifying.

You should now be able to go to the Purchases tab and find iPhoto with the Update button labeled "Install"

Click "Install" and it should download the current version which works with Yosemite.

    • When I first tried, after authenticating, it posted a 503 error and asked if I wanted to Retry. When I clicked "Retry," it started downloading.

It's about 1.2 GB, so it takes a little while to fully download.

*Updated to address Hidden Purchases as pointed out by sberman

You "un-hide" purchases under your Account Info in iTunes on your Mac. Sign into iTunes and click on your name, then on Account Info. Under iTunes in the Cloud you should see the Hidden Purchases option if you have any Hidden Purchases to manage.
