My HDMI port on my new 2015 Macbook 13inch won't work. When i plug it into the port for the TV or for presentations at school it doesn't register and nothing happens. How can I make it work?

This was the first time i tried it.
I have not restarted it or put it to sleep. i will try that.
i tried another cable and it still didn't work.
My OS X version is yosemite version 10.10.3
and at school just to hook it up to the projection screen to present powerpoints etc...

have other folks succeeded at school?
to clarify... when folks travel or commute, a lot of folks are in the habit of just shutting the clamshell (putting the MBPro to sleep) and not shutting down.
it is 'possible' that the MBPro or the display doesn't like either of the cables you tried.

tell us the exact steps you take when you hook it up at school - start with taking it out of your book bag - every detail.
Also, at school, who is "in charge" of the projector? Ask for help from that person.

Same issue. 2015 MBP. HDMI was working fine last night. Plugged it in this morning and now it won't even detect (tried Option key in Display settings) and tried resetting PRAM, SMC, etc. (spelling?).
HDMI cable and TV still work perfectly fine with Windows Laptops.
