Q: Photos 1.0 - 'Clear Placed Photo' page problem

My document is an 8" x 8" softcover book using the portfolio theme. The photo shows a thumbnail view of two pages in it.

The right hand page appears to be prepared for me to create a picture background. The left hand page background is white.

This is the lower left command button area of the pages enlarged for editing.

All the other pages in the book simply have 'Auto-Fill'.

This is the right hand corner of the same page. The error flag must be telling me that a photo selected for the background is the wrong size to fit properly. ?? I can find no way to get any more of an explanation of the problem than the little symbol which simply says "Oops!"

I considered deleting the page and adding it again, but I cannot delete it.

I tried the 'Clear Placed Photos' command and it cleared all the photos from both pages on the edit display even through the left hand page was not selected.

I have no real idea what is wrong or how to fix it. The left hand page background is white when I view it as a PDF. Just leave well enough alone? I would like to know what's going on.

Have you tried to switch the format of the page to a different page layout from the selection of 1-photo layouts?

It is puzzling that you are seeing a photo background layout, because the portfolio theme does not have a photo background layout.  Has the book been migrated from iPhoto?

The red waning triangle is indicating that the text is too long for the text field. You may have hidden text in the text field, that is hidden by the boundaries of the textbook.

I could produce the same triangle simply by clicking into the default text in the box.

I think that a straightforward way of getting basic information about the project would simplify problems like this. There needs to be a way to get to the document preferences to find out things such as its theme.

The document that was converted from iPhoto has pages with a black background. When I look at the page options I see background boxes to let me choose White, black or photo. I have no idea which Photos theme it is. The only way I can think of to figure it out is to try each theme there is with a new document. I can't tell from the theme pictures under themes which one matches the document. The converted document page options are 1 Photo - 2 Photos - Text - Map - Blank. Is Photos able to modify a theme to try to suit a iPhotos project?

The red triangle appears inside the text box when the text won't fit. (In my document at least). The red triangle in the corner of the page must mean something else - but what? There seems to be no way to find out what it wants to tell you when you have no idea to begin with.

I want to get into the Guinness Book for "confusion," but I can't figure out how!

That would be a big improvement indeed. None of Apple's photo applications has this feature so far, not even the professional version "Aperture".

As you can see in  my screenshot, the red triangle is outside the textbook, when I did nothing but enter text.

In your case I'd try to copy the text from the textbook to a different text document - save it to Textedit or somewhere. Then delete the text from the box and put it back - paragraph for paragraph.

The converted document page options are 1 Photo - 2 Photos - Text - Map - Blank. Is Photos able to modify a theme to try to suit a iPhotos project?

The only information we have from Apple is that it will use a default theme, if the iPhoto Theme cannot be reproduced correctly.

As described here: How Photos handles content and metadata from iPhoto and Aperture - Apple Support

Duplicate your book so you can try to figure out the theme by switching the theme in the copy.  One of the themes I found that allows a photo background is Travelogue, in the hardcover version of the theme.

When you go to the "Switch heme" page, the currently used theme should be highlighted by a thin frame like this:

You have been very helpful. I see now what you mean about the projects.

The conversion from iPhoto must have turned the book into a "Best Friends" Picture Book. I copied the book to enlarge it, and attempt to get more control over it as I didn't understand the theme or how to work with it.

I want to show you what I mean about the warning symbols. The warning appears to be inside the lower right hand corner of the area having a problem detected. It seems to be designed with the thought in mind that the user is getting immediate feedback on whatever she happens to be doing. Photo doesn't help much if she is in the same boat as I am with regard to the warning near the page edge. If you don't already know what the matter is, you are in for a hard time. I hope the developers will display an explanation to tell you what's wrong when you click on the splat.

    Thanks again.
