Q: EtreCheck HELP!

Problem description:

Went on vacation; shut down computer before leaving.  Husband came home first, he says he didn’t change anything and most of the problems seem to be happening on my profile.

1- Keychain can’t be found

2- Can’t access numerous websites with Safari

3- Can’t access all of my iCloud info under preferences

These are the main issues - more frustrating than it seems and I something tells me I have a bigger problem.  No we have no back-up, husband didn’t think we needed to spend the money.  I disagree and am ready to do it now (he’s away on business!)  Should I just get the Time Machine?

Just two comments:  yes get an external drive and start using Time machine and also get  more memory.  Yosemite does not run well with only 4GTB of RAM  Notice all your system launch agents/Daemons  killed from lack of memory

Should I just get the Time Machine?

Time Machine is an app and can be used with any external drive. Starting a Time Machine or clone backup is not going to solve your current issue, but once you get your problem solved, I highly suggest your setup a backup strategy.

All the items in red indicate memory issues. You only have 4GB RAM but if were running OK prior to your vacation, this would indicate new issues causing memory problems.

      iMac (21.5-inch, Mid 2010)

Considering it's age, it's possible your iMac is starting to fail.

    Restart in Safe Boot Mode.

    *  shutdown

    *  start the Mac and *wait* for the startup chime to sound

    *  after the sound, press and hold down the shift key

    *  keep holding and *wait* until the grey  Apple logo appears

    *  now release the shift key and just wait (it could take a few minutes)

    *  eventually the login screen appears with the words SAFE BOOT

    *  continue to login to see if the problem goes away.

If yes, then download and run Adware Medic. Did it find any files to remove?

    Download the AdwareMedic removal tool

    http://www.adwaremedic.com/kb/download-redirect.php

If safe boot fails to allow you to run your apps....

Boot into the Recovery Drive by holding down Command R when restarting.

Run Repair Drive and Repair Permissions using Disk Utility in Recovery.

You might need to reinstall OS X.

    Create a Clone backup:

A clone is an exact bootable copy of your internal drive. Unlike standard copying of all files to another drive, the clone software copies hidden files along with other in-use files that are not available  when you copy over files to another drive.

    More info on Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disk_cloning

Time Machine is not bootable on older versions of OS X. You could only restore from Time Machine unless you have a newer Time Machine that is now includes a recovery drive that is bootable. .

    Software used to Clone:

    SuperDuper! http://www.shirt-pocket.com/ (free)

    CCC http://www.bombich.com/download.html

    Drive Info

USB 3.0 drives work on USB 2.0 but you do get 2.0 speed. They are cheaper because they are popular PC drives. If you get a new computer you'll get the bump to 3.0 speed. I don’t recommend FW. The newer computers don’t have FW ports. You would need a connector in order to use the drive on a newer computer.

Size:  I recommend either the 2T or 3T drives.  Often they are cheaper than a 1T drive. 4T drives have come down in price now, but that's a lot of data to loose if the drive were to die.

This Western Digital drive has good reviews: Has a 2 yr warranty. It's available as Mac and/or PC. PC drives are easily formatted with Apple's Disk Utility. Even the Mac drive that comes formatted for Mac, I would still format using Disk Utility.

WD My Book 3 TB USB 3.0 Hard Drive with Backup (PC version $91.99)

WD My Book Hard Drive for Mac 3 TB (WDBYCC0030HBK-NESN) (Mac version $109.00)

Check the warranty when comparing. The longer the warranty the better the drive.

Locally, most stores will match Amazon pricing. Just ask.

If you decide to add RAM, the 2 places I’ve seen recommended most to buy reliable RAM are below. I have purchased RAM several times from Other World Computing and have always been very satisfied with the product and service. They have on-line instructions on how to replace the RAM. OWC has also tested RAM above what Apple states is the maximum. I now have 6GB installed on a early 2008 iMac supposedly limited to 4 GB and noticed an improvement.

Thank you for all the replies.  I am somewhat less confused.  First thing I need to do is back it up, right?  So just to keep things all in the family, should I get the Airport Time Capsule?  Or go with the WD External Drive?

Yes. Do a backup, preferable 2 separate ones on 2 drives. I would get 2 refurbished Time Capsules. They come with the same warranty as a new one and they just work. Based on what I have read in this forum, I wouldn't even consider a WD drive.

Unless you have a strong need for a Time Capsule, I would use an external disk.  Since you have an iMac is not moving around, so an external disk is an easy thing to provide.

If there is concern about product reliability, then 2 different external disks from 2 different disk manufactures, and do backups to both.  One a Time Machine backup and one a Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper bootable clone.  The best of both worlds.
