ipod classic 3 rd generation won't charger from ipad charger

Thank you for taking the time to help me.

I've just purchased a 2003 ipod classic 3rd generation and I can't get it to turn on or charge.

I first tried plugging it into my laptop with USB2 ports and Itunes didn't see it or it didn't turn on or show a charging symbol.

I then tried to charge it from a small iphone charging plug and it still didnt show any sign of life.

When I got home from work i then tried it with my ipad 3 rd gen charging plug and it still didn't work.

I've tried the power reset by holding down the menu and select button together for over 6 seconds, still no life.

Do i need the original Firewire charger to charge this device?
