Q: I updated software on old G4 and now it will not start or reboot from disks. It was all good until I updated software.  Same model as <http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/powermac_g4/specs/powermac_g4_867_dp_mdd .html>   Any ideas?   Chris   PS I h

I wish I could say, X. something I would hazard a guess at X.7.5 which is what my current machine runs but I could not say for certain.

When I turn the machine on it chimes then starts with a grey screen and apple symbol. From there I get the spinning grey wheel and it hangs from then on. I left it for a hour to no avail. I tried inserting a variety of original OS disks, holding down the C key to see if I could boot from those and the result was the same. I suspect the operating system I updated too is not compatible with the older processors.

The computer had been dormant for some time but when I restarted it, all was fine. It connected to the wifi and I received an update window which I proceeded to do. Thanks for the tip of starting in single user mode, however I had forgotten Applejack installed so when I hold Command S Applejack begins. I typed applejack AUTO restart and it ran through its series of fixes but on restarting I am back to the grey screen and wheel. I tried a few OS disks but am still getting no further than the grey screen.

Apparently not. Just more grey screen. I ran AJ again but still nothing and then tried booting from a Diskwarrier CD. Still nothing. Seems like a meltdown although can hear the HD searching away when I

put disks in.

I've tried every Mac install disk too from Tiger to Snow Leopard. It nay just be a door stop now!

I have the solid gray disks x 3 (Install Disks 1 and 2) plus a software install and restore disk.

I also have the black disks with a big X -  OSX.3 Panther disks x 3

A single  Leopard disk X.5.1and a single Snow Leopard disk x.6.3.
