Q: When I try to edit my outgoing server, Mail automatically adds my email to the server name, making the server unusable.  Why?  How can I fix?

    How are you trying to add the outgoing mail account?

    By editing the outgoing mail server under Accounts/Account Information in Mail Preferences.

    Select the Advanced tab in the settings for the account and uncheck the box marked

              Automatically detect and maintain account settings

    Close the preferences window and save the change.

    The list of SMTP servers also lists the username used to authenticate that server, this makes it 'look' like it is adding the username to the server address. It should look something like

     

    mail.domain.com:username

     

    Note the colon separating them.

     

    These days it is almost universal that mail servers require users to use authentication in order to be able to send emails as a means of reducing spam.

     

    You can edit the details by selecting 'Edit SMTP Server List...' from that drop down menu, then use the 'Advanced' tab.
