The shared photos are stored in iCloud. I want to copy selected photos to a "local" album on my iMac.

select them and export (file menu ==> export) to a desktop folder if you want outside Photos on the Mac - if you wan them in an album in Photos select them and click the Plus sign and create the album

TThe method I would up using was to select a shared photo, select "edit" which then requires an import to my iPhoto file. The downside here is that I can only import one photo at a time.
another option which is a lot more mac user friendly is the following:
1. Go to View drop down
2. Select Show Sidebar
3. You will then see the sidebar with ALL of your albums-- shared and every other album on your mac
4. Simply select one or all of your pictures from a shared album
5. Then drag it to the album of your choice
Thanks! This really helped. I was growing very frustrated with Apple over how they can call this shared stream an "album" without offering a very simple ordering function. By moving the photos from Shared Album to an album, I am now able to sort. I was worried that importing would create redundant copies of the photos. It seems that your method worked without redundancy.
Much thanks.

The photos in a Shared Album are displayed as they are on Apple's server and that is in the order they were added. You can only sort photos that are stored locally in the library and that's why it works in an album.
