Footnote numbers

I hope there is someone that is able to assist me. I have a problem with the footnote numbers in the text. When I change the number format, the text changes as well. It seems as if the footnotes are part of the text, and is not seen as a separate footnote number. (Pages 5.5.3) Thanking you in advance.

You state that you have Pages v6.0.5, but your menu example is from Pages '09 Insert menu with the option key pressed to change the Footnote entry to Custom Footnote… . There is no option modifier available for Pages v5/v6 Insert menu footnote item.

The optional Custom Footnote panel allows you to enter your own footnote character. I launched the Edit menu : Emojis & Symbols panel from the Pages '09 application, and simply double-clicked this emoji to use it as a custom footnote.

Consider that only saving to Pages '09, or export to PDF will preserve this emoji footnote, so the character that you choose should be tested with your intended export format. Opening the Pages '09 document with Pages v5.6.2 on El Capitan, or converting it to Pages v5 document format — preserves this emoji character.

Increase your document size to 150%. From the View menu, Show invisibles.

In the footnote section of your document, you will now see your footnote number, a blue space, and the rest of your footnote text. You can either select the number, and change its color, then enter your footnote text in a different color, or change the footnote number and text to one color, and then click and drag from left to right to select the text afterward, and then set the text color. You may want to revisit your document body and selecting the footnote number, color it to match the number in the footnote section.

The following is enlarged 150%, and from Pages v5.2.2. Should be no difference on Yosemite with v5.5.3.

Thank you very much for your reply! I am now able to change the footnote numbers in the footnote text, but I want to change the corresponding number in the main text (document body). I am unable to change it there. I select the footnote number in the document body, but as soon as I've changed the number, the rest of the paragraph is changed as well. It seems as if there is no "paragraph style" for footnote numbers in the body of the document? This means that I will have to manually change every single footnote number in the body.

In Pages v5.2.2 and Pages v5.5.3 (just checked), the coloration of the footnote number in the body text is entirely independent of its color in the footnote, or any color assigned to the footnote text.

Modifications to the footer number, and/or text are slightly more awkward in Pages v5.5.3 due to the need to double-click to get focus in that area. Once focus is achieved, one can click behind the footnote number (either in the footer or body text), and drag left to select it. Similarly, one can click at the beginning of the footnote text and drag to the right to select it.

The following are from Pages v5.5.3:

Thanks VikingOSX, I understand that. But unfortunately my problem is not solved (yet). Let us work with the number 1 in Dog1. What is the paragraph style of that number? If I insert a footnote, that number is automatically inserted as body, superscript 12. Is there a place where I can change the format of that number, not the other numbers that appear in the footnotes/endnotes. (Thank you very much for your assistance!)

In my document, the word Dog, and the footnote are by default — body paragraph style. Since the footnote number is a single character, changing the paragraph style will effect the word it is assigned too.

If you want to apply a character style to this number, only the bold, italic, and underscore buttons (above Character Styles on the Format panel) do not revert the superscripted number into regular text. Otherwise, select the footnote number in the body text, modify it to suit your taste, and then in the Character Styles, add this custom superscript as a new style. You may want to add this to a standard template that you use for future application.
