Q: Wifi connection appears as ethernet in System Preferences

Macbook Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2014 OS X Mavericks

 

I have a working connection via wifi, but when I open System Preferences, Networking panel, it shows that I am connected via Ethernet and Wifi shows "not connected" I have no ethernet cable connected to my computer. Should I worry about this? Is it a known issue? I have noticed this problem both at home and at work. At home I have an Airport Extreme providing wifi. At work it is a netgear FVS318N VPN router.
