imessages and facetime will not activate on my new iphone 6

I got a new Iphone 6 and it won't activate imessage or face time with the current phone number.

My previous phone number appears on both settings (facetime's and imessage) but of course that is useless as I do not longer have that number.

I have tried activation a lot of times and it doesn't work. Could it be related to the fact that I got it setup from a backup of my previous iphone 5 which had my previous phone number?

Thanks thunderzzz, although the link you sent was not specific on my problem, it pointed me out on the right direction. I had issues with my carrier when it came to international SMS with my service plan, so I had to buy some extra balance for the iphone to be able to send the SMSs that it automatically sends to U.S. (I'm assuming the destination).
