Ummm im not to sure what it said, something like unable to update due to such and such problem.. but i dont know what the problem was 😟 which probably makes solving it hard. I have a 32gb touch ipod. When i try to switch it on it will come up with the usb pointing to itunes... then i just turns off after a few seconds

Take a look at the Apple Support articles I've given a link to, make sure you have the latest version of iTunes and try to restore your device to factory settings. Note that this will erase the data from your device.

Take a look this Apple Support article: Use iTunes to restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings - Apple Support.

As a final step, try the recovery mode. Turn your device off, then plug it to your computer with the home button pressed. You will need to have iTunes installed on this computer. Keep the Home button pressed until you see the iTunes logo on the screen of your iPhone. After that on your computer you should see the iTunes window saying your iPhone needs to be restored to factory settings. Click on the restore button.

Try connecting your device to another computer with iTunes installed. You may ask your friend, for example.

Also, you may try the DFU mode:

  • USB cable.
  • Turn off the device.
  • Press and hold the Power button for 3 seconds
  • Press the Home button while holding the Power button and hold both for 10 seconds.
  • Release the Power button, but KEEP HOLDING the Home button.
  • After about 15 seconds, iTunes will tell you it has detected a device in Recovery Mode.
  • Restore your device

Sorry it's taken me so long to reply I've been so sick that I just left my Ipod to deal with later.

Ended up following your instructions today for recovery mode- holding the home and power button together then letting go of the power button whilst still holding the home button (it took a few tries but I managed to get iTunes to bring up recovery mode!) Did have a new update for iTunes before doing the above but I'm so happy because my Ipod is now up and running again... Yippee!!

Thank you so much D. Cohen, I wouldn't have known what to do with out your help! 🙂
