Finder freezes during copy

Recently, I have experienced the following issue:
When trying to copy files (about 146MB worth) onto an external hard drive, Finder froze after copying about 17.5MB. I couldn't do anything else with Finder, and forcing it to restart caused my whole computer to hang. I had to hold down the power button and force a shutdown, then reboot.
Eventually, by copying smaller batches of files, I was able to get my dataset backed up like I wanted, and it even started working with larger batches of files (like my 9.5GB itunes library at once).

As a result of the forced shutdown, my itunes library was corrupted (though all my music was still on the disk and I easily restored it), and MS Office hasn't been behaving when trying to open or save files. Disk Utility says permissions are fine and my drive itself is fine. I thought that almost everything was okay beside Office, though uninstalling and reinstalling did not help.

Then, when I tried to copy files to a network-mounted drive, Finder froze again! I'm not trying to copy excessively large batches of data, or copy much from the desktop, but Finder continues to freeze when I do file copies.

Has anybody else had this problem and/or found a resolution?

Hi David,

I have the same problem with an external USB Hard Drive (formatted in FAT32): writing to it usually works, but reading (when copying files) often hangs before reaching 100MB.

My solution is to copy files using the Terminal application (command cp). That always works, contrary to copying files with the Finder!

Apple should really work on that bug in the Finder, because it's really ridiculous!!! The Finder in System 7 was working much better than today's MacOSX Finder!!!

Thanks. That seems to work well, though it's often hard to tell if the terminal is still going when dealing with large files.

I also found out that my USB drive needs to be plugged into both USB ports to get enough power to keep copying. It's got a two-usb connection at one end, and if I don't plug it into both, the drive shuts down partway through copying.

The terminal method seems pretty surefire to me for copying

I have found that my computer has a similar problem. BUT I am not as technical savy as the other consumers. Could you explain in more common, simple terms what I can do to correct this problem? I have come across the same problem with the Finder "locking up". It is always when I am copying a document file or picture from the computer to the USB drive. It shows that it is "busy" and will not "force quit" when I try that. It just locks up even further. I don't have any problems on my PC doing this, so what can I do to be able to transfer or copy information without it locking up every time? Thank you! PS, I just got the computer a week ago so the computer guys at work say that I shouldn't be having any problems. I would appreciate any help! Thanks again.
