Your MacBook (13-inch 1.83GHz coreduo) appears to be a first-edition model and due
to the limits of the early models, the best or last capable system to run in the hardware
would be Snow Leopard OS X 10.6.8. While there may be some applications available
to perform certain tasks, most of the thrust of later models with much advanced GPU
and CPU hardware have left these vintage models behind.
These may still be worth fixing, if one chose to keep and use it, with the vintage OS X
and applications best suited for that era of computing. However to get an idea of the
kind of costs to repair it, you may need to locate an independent authorized Apple
service provider, who would still be willing to inspect, repair, or renovate old Macs.
As I have a similar model, (w/2GB RAM & fast 7200-RPM 160GB hard disk drive) it's
a happy candidate for Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and the retail install DVD is still available
from Apple store online for under $20. with update bits via software update, after that.
By using Snow Leopard with its available vintage 'rosetta' option installed from the
retail DVD, that computer can still run some applications written with PPC Mac code.
The later 10.7. Lion cannot.
You may find some older models, previously-owned and repaired, at such places as
wegenermedia, macsales, and several others who offer repaired with guaranties. Or
look into the Apple Store online, for certified refurbished models at discount from retail.
So the best way to upgrade past that early model, is to keep it and buy a later one.
Then you may still have access to a good vintage platform & Snow Leopard, too.
Good luck!
