Q: Purchased OS X Server App 4.1, No Longer Accepts Admin PW?

Hi All,

My employer uses a MacMiniServer, mid-2011, to host our network. We recently (May 2015) upgraded the OS on it to Yosemite - 10.10.3. After upgrading, the server app no longer is supported and we were directed to download "OS X Server" via the App store. Hoping to establish Time Machine backups of networked Macs in our offices, I spent the $20 today to purchase the app "OS X Server". My problem is that upon opening the software, (Version 4.1) and after accepting the user agreement, it takes me to a prompt saying "Administrator access is required to set up OS X server on this Mac" - which shouldn't be a problem but it's not accepting the credentials which I know to be correct. It auto-populates the user-name field to the account I'm currently signed in as, which is absolutely an administrative account. The password I entered logging in today is the one it's rejecting. I've navigated to a couple places in our network where it also prompts for administrative credentials, the password I've been trying works OK there, too. I reset the password through "Users & Group Preferences" and it wouldn't accept the changed one either. I tried changing the user name field to include our domain suffix, no luck. Also tried entering our associated Apple ID credentials, no luck.

I found this article: Server App or Server Admin can't connect to a newly upgraded Lion server - Apple Support

It seems to detail a similar problem that occurred with versions 10.6 to 10.7.2, I'm not sure how relevant it is.

Has anyone else been experiencing this, or know of any documentation about it? Is it looking for a local administrator account or an Apple ID or what? I'm a bit embarrassed to be posting a support question about not being able to enter a password but I am very confident that what I've been trying all morning is definitely a valid administrative password.

I apologize for probably not using the correct language or including the right details - I am not a formally trained IT person by any stretch and am happy to provide any other information that could be helpful.

Thanks so much!

It sounds like you need to reinstall the base OS.

I appreciate you taking the time to reply, but is that really the only course of action here?

Reinstalling an OS will bring down our network and prohibit us from functioning. Granted, our network is poorly laid-out and not set up to industry best practices but the fact remains that we rely on it. Just upgrading to Yosemite blacked us out for almost two days and required the assistance of outside IT support. I find it very frustrating that we were required to spend money to upgrade the server app, an app which is made by Apple, to remain compliant with the OS upgrade only to discover that it's basic functionality doesn't work.

Given that this thread hasn't garnered any other replies and I haven't been able to google any similar threads elsewhere perhaps something in our wonky network architecture is contributing to this, otherwise I suspect other users would be experiencing the same problem. It wouldn't surprise me, but then again I am not at all trained in IT/networking.

Anyway, thanks again for at least replying!

You can try to boot into the repair partition by holding down the option key with a restart of your server. When it is finished booting go to the utilities menu then select Terminal. After the terminal has started type resetpassword at the command line and press enter. This will start a program that will let you change the admin password to a new one.
