Connecting Macbook air to Mac desktop.

I have a macbook air and an mac desktop. Both have thunderbolt connections and both are running Yosemite 10.10.3. They connect wirelessly but not via thunderbolt. Any ideas?

Open Network preferences. Enable the port for Ethernet over Thunderbolt to allow direct connections. I don't recall how it's worded in Mountain Lion, but this image is from Yosemite:
