Q: Problem connecting on video chat AIM account/Messages

I've recently upgraded to a new iMac (27" Retina, 3.5ghz i5). I'm running Yosemite 10.10.3.

After years of successful and problem-free video chatting with family using an AIM account with Messages (and iChat before that), I'm suddenly having connection issues.

Curiously, I'm able to connect on my first attempt of the day. The video and audio work wonderfully, the chat can go on as long as desired, etc.

With every subsequent attempt to connect, the video chat will *not* connect.

I've deleted and re-added my aim account multiple times. Clearly my router is allowing the video chatting since a) I never had a problem in 8+ years previously with several different macs and b) I am even able to connect on this Mac, albeit intermittently.

I would welcome any advice.

iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2014), OS X Yosemite (10.10.3)

Wow!! Am I glad I found this thread, I thought I was going nuts and couldn't use Messsages anymore! My problems have been going on for the past few months with all of my regular Message buddies. Some are Yosemite and a couple are Mavericks so we had no darn idea what was going on. We all have different ISP's so that wasn't the problem either. I too have spent mucho time with two levels of apple tech support and have gotten nowhere except to do a reinstall of OS X which did nothing. Below is a rather lengthly copy of an error message I received when trying to initiate a video chat. Thanks guys!!

    Hi,

This one answered in an Email as I was contacted that way as well.

    Hi,

Most evenings I spend about 3 hours answering questions on the Apple Community boards.

If I am still subscribed to a thread I will get an email telling me someone has posted.

Whilst the email alert system is not without it’s occasional faults I do see most things.

My practice is to answer all new posts in date and time order  ( I was away this last weekend and missed two evenings).

Then I read all the unread posts in iChat, Mavericks, filtered for Messages and the same in Yosemite.

(You can filter the threads  direct from the particular Communities  but with a little bit of work you can then see the Unread ones).

    From the Log:-

    Video Conference Error Report:

The Above is the important bit as it says there is an issue with the SIP bit.

All the SIP bits go through an Apple  Server called SNATMAP and it’s only job is to connect iChat and Messages AIM and Jabber Video and Audio or Screen Sharing chats.

It seems there is an issue with this server.

I have made the Hosts aware  and they say they have passed it onwards.

    We just have to wait

I will not bet on a fault with SIP server, remember it work well with Lan. It's look like more an issue on the return (connecting after invite answer) who don't reach the SIP server.

Here I turn on the supposition mode. (not able to trace anything)

Apple use a database to translate IP in a code for caller and receiver to hide each other during the connection. (Viceroy)

My supposition would be more in a problem there, and/or possible impact/consequence with NAT routing.

Why now ? why so long to fix ? maybe some work on security (double authentification with iMessage was not long away), but that more supposition.

if only Apple could solved that issue before the end of this month (8/2015), It would be fantastic for me.

Yes, please, Apple, this is a feature that used to work very well, and now is broken.

Use some of the $203 billion you have in cash reserves to service your existing products. It's a shame that a bunch of unpaid posters in the community have to do all the legwork on this particular problem.  A few more software engineers really aren't that expensive, in context.

    Sorry,

    Hi,

Your end (the LAN) already has a connection to the SNATMAP server.

That way tends to mean the firewall will let info/data back in again in answer to the outgoing call.

It seems that this works for the SNATMAP server.

What it is having trouble with is linking you to the other end when it is somewhere else on the Internet.

At present even though there appear to be many threads with yet more multiple posters in them reporting this, it certainly is not everyone that is using iChat (where it can be AIM and Jabber accounts only) or those same account types in Messages.

That is to say that the people not reporting the issue is higher than those that are.

That itself is complicated by the fact many have moved fully to iMessages and no longer use AIM or Jabber accounts in the same way.

The SIP process uses PINGS to confirm that where the Visible Invite went to is the place that is responding to the SIP call.

My testing of the SNATMAP server with asking it to respond to PINGS has not got a response.
I am reluctant to test further as that will also look like an attack if the Server is already being attacked.

As this process has been in place since iChat 2.1 when the app "went Video" I would be surprised if it had been changed at all.

The issue will be solving any issue with the SNAPMAP Server so it still works with all versions of iChat and Messages.

SUCCESS!  This morning I successfully did a screen sharing over the internet between a MacBook Pro running OS 10.8.5 and Messages 7.0.1 with another MacBook running OS 10.7.5 and iChat 6.0.2, as we had been doing for years.

We didn't change any parameters on either end, so it is due to something in-between.

Hope this is permanent, and not a fluke of some kind.

Thank you!  Anyone else still having trouble?

It was pretty consistent this morning.  We had a few disconnects when his Mac overloaded (normal), but were able to ring/accept again right away with no delays.  It was normal behavior for 3 hours.

There was one change this morning...my Comcast cable modem (Motorola SurfBoard) had frozen after an overnight thunderstorm.  I unplugged it for 30 seconds to let it reset, and got a new IP address.  The client did not, as far as I know.

I'm having the same issue   We have been able to do video conferencing for a while, then it was intermittent where it would work and not work, now it's not working at all!  I just spent an hour with Apple support and she talked to level 2 - apparently they are saying they no longer support video chat via Messages and they also no longer support video conferencing - can only video chat via FaceTime!  If this is true then Apple has taken a HUGE step backwards regarding their video chatting capabilities.  Is anyone able to do video conferencing with 3 or more people?

    Hi,

We know from the logs that the issue is with the SNATMAP server that connects AIM and Jabber type chats.

The logs would not appear if the SNATMAP server had been turned Off.

We know the issue is with the SNATMAP server when the other end is at a different IP address.

Calls between two accounts on two computer but on the same LAN work.

This is El Capitan Beta to iChat 5.0.3 using two AIM accounts but on the same LAN.

Name of Pic "Screen Shot 2015-08-27 at 21.55.23.png"  (I.e. Today)

The Hosts have been made aware and have not come back to say the SNATMAP server has been turned Off.  (on the other hand they rarely come back with any definitive info on any subject.)

If FaceTime could handle up to 4 video chats and screen sharing, that would be all right. Otherwise, it isn't all right.

    Hi Linda,

You are so right!! This whole situation is so unlike the Apple that is presented to the public as being on top of problems etc. As far as I can see they have done and are apprently doing NOTHING to ameliorate the situation whatsoever. When volunteers on forums know more than the very highly paid company people than I submit that something is seriously amiss.

Totally agree with you Linda and Ragnar51!,

It's a sad day when you have to dismiss some of the native Apple Apps you've enjoyed using and have been using for so long like Messenger/iChat (formerly known by).  I don't even like using FaceTime on desktop - one: you can't do multiple video calls with it; two: for some reason it likes to drop audio almost completely on Final Cut (as well as other apps running) so you can't video chat while discussing and making edits in their ProApp since you can't hear the audio; Three: you have to have FaceTime open on your desktop to know you are receiving a video chat request which basically has your camera turned on the whole time.  I always swear by Apple and LOVE their products but it really is annoying when volunteers (as ragnar51 pointed out) on forums seem to know more than they do and/or they simply are choosing not to do anything about it.  I remember watching them introduce conference video chat within iChat at their Keynote and how revolutionary they were saying it would be.  It's crazy to think that they would so easily dismiss a feature that they were so excited to introduce.  Sorry for the lengthy rant .  If anyone is looking for a workaround - I've now had to search for a 3rd party app and just started using Skype to chat back and forth as well as conference video chats.  I'm not quite sure I'll ever go back to using Messages/iChat again unfortunately.  Hopefully someone at Apple will pay attention to these forums and finally fix this.
