Perhaps you have another iPhoto library to import into Photos. Help here > Get started with Photos for OS X - Apple Support

Jun 20, 2015 10:29 AM in response to Carolyn Samitby Bankshooligan,Hi Carolyn, many thanks for your reply and suggestion. I have tried everything at that link you mention already I'm afraid. The only way I can restart Photos is by force quit. Once I restart it, inc. with the option key pressed it just comes back to the same situation. If I could use the 'preferences' command under the Photos tab I guess I could select where the images are.... but this command is greyed out. Very few commands seem to be accessible, under the File tab only 'export' is available, under the Edit tab only Font, Spelling and Emoji & symbols; nothing under the Image tab, under the View tab only Metadata and Enter full screen.... etc. You get the idea. Is it worth (or even possible) to uninstall Photos, reinstall it and try starting from scratch? Thanks for your help.

Jun 20, 2015 10:44 AM in response to Bankshooliganby Old Toad,You'll need to click on the Photos tab, select an image before the menus become active.
To get Photos to be more like iPhoto use the key combination of Option+Command+S to open the sidebar.
Moments in Photos are the new Events, i.e. groupings of photos sorted by date taken.
When the iPhoto Library was first migrated to Photos there is a folder created in the sidebar titled iPhoto Events and all migrated iPhoto Events (which are now Moments) are represented by an album in that folder. To open the sidebar if it's not already open use the Option+Command+S key combination.
There's a way to simulate events in Photos.
When new photos are imported into the Photos library go to the Last Import smart album, select all the photos and use the File ➙ New Album menu option or use the key combination Command+N. Name it as desired. It will appear just above the iPhoto Events folder where you can drag it into the iPhoto Events folder
When you click on the iPhoto Events folder you'll get a simulated iPhoto Events window.
The downside to the simulation is that the Albums/Events can only be sorted automatically by Title. But they can also be sorted manually, either in the sidebar or in the folder's window at the right.
Ask Apple for more sorting options in Photos via https://www.apple.com/feedback/photos.html.

Jun 20, 2015 11:05 AM in response to Old Toadby Bankshooligan,Hi Old Toad, many thanks for your post. OK, I think the problem that I have is that I can't import any pictures..... how is this done?! I can't get past the 'get started' button on the welcome page...... I can take the 'quick tour' (and it looks good) but that's as far as I get.... Once I click on the 'get started button' on the welcome page that's it... it will stay on that page churning away for hours, even days... The only way to close it down is to 'force quit'. Does that make sense?
Thanks.

Jun 20, 2015 11:29 AM in response to Bankshooliganby Old Toad,★HelpfulTry this:
Close/quit Photos. Next drag your iPhoto library onto the Photos icon in the Dock. That should start the Photos conversion of the iPhoto library to a Photos library without the introduction stage.
