Back to iphoto help please

Right. I have lost patience with Photos. I want events back as I use them differently from albums and like to find the events arranged chronologically when I open the app (yes, I have submitted a feedback request to Apple).

It has got to the stage where I never even go on Photos any more because I know my photos will just appear in an unmanageable jumble and I will not find what I want and I cannot organise them the way I want.

So, I have decided to go back to iPhoto.

Is there a protocal I need to follow to make sure I don't lose anything and that all will be well when I get there, and so my computer knows to open iPhoto and not Photos next time?

I would be grateful for any pointers here. Thanks.

First, make sure you have the latest (& last) version of iPhotos installed. That is version 9.6.1, the only version compatible with Yosemite 10.10.3. If you do not, see the user tip, Get iPhoto 9.6.1 if you didn't update before OS X 10.10.3 by Barney-15E for info on how to get it.

Next, find your iPhotos Library file. By default it will be in your Pictures folder but could be somewhere else. Double-click on it. You should get this:

User uploaded file

Choose the circled option, after taking note of the info about any changes you have made in Photos since migrating not being in the iPhoto Library.

You can remove Photos from the Dock & replace it with the iPhoto application (drag it into the Dock from the Applications folder) if you want. Launching it from the Dock should open your iPhotos Library from now on.

Thank you both. In fact, my iPhoto library was (and still is) on an external drive. It is in fact intact and I just had to change the icons in the dock.
It all feels more comfortable and like I am in control. I do hope they bring something akin to Events back to Photos soon.

Another related question.
To reduce clutter on the hard drive I would like to removed the photos from Photos (and maybe start again later). Is it best to do this from the folder or in the main app?

Thanks again for responding.

Assuming you have not made any edits or added any keywords, descriptions, etc. to the Photos Library that you want to save, you can just delete that (the Photos) Library from the drive. However, assuming the iPhoto Library was on the same drive as the Photos one created by migrating it when you first opened Photos, don't be surprised if you don't see the expected increase in free space on that drive.

To understand why, see Photos saves disk space by sharing images with your iPhoto or Aperture libraries - Apple Support or the more in depth explanation in Six Colors: The (hard) link between Photos and iPhoto.
