Q: iMac mouse, keyboard and system freezes on fresh install
Trying to fix a friends 2008 2.4Ghz 20" iMac. Originally had 1GB of RAM, which I've now upgraded to 4GB and worked fine using Snow Leopard. I've had a problem upgrading from Snow Leopard, so I decided to do a fresh install. I backed up the data using Time Machine and that's sitting on a separate drive nice and safe.
I've created a bootable 8GB USB stick with Mountain Lion and Yosemite using the Disk Utility method and the DiskMaker method. Using the Option + R to boot from the USB (but using Disk Utility first to do a Erase and Format (MAC Extended Journaled) on the Macintosh HD I then started the instal. It starts fine and then around 13-14 minutes, the iMac totally freezes and I have no response from keyboard or mouse and just hangs. I read that you need to be patient and wait, so I did
and 10 hours later I'm still here.
I've tried OSX Recovery and OS X Recovery over the internet. Everything I do with all the help our there, the machine just 'hangs' and becomes totally unresponsive. I'm not convinced it's a hardware issue as the machine was working perfectly well in Snow Leopard just a couple of days ago.
Does anybody have any thoughts on this, with any solution? Anything would be really appreciated. Otherwise it's a trip to the Genius Bar.
Cheers
iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.8)
