I have my songs backed up on a usb thumb drive which I use in my car. I want to add them to my I tunes library on my iMac. How do I do that if it is possible.

If you have audio or video files on your computer, you can import them into iTunes so they appear in your iTunes library.
Add items from your computer to your iTunes library
Do either of the following:
Drag it from the drive to iTunes.
Thanks for trying to help, but neither process transferred the files. They remain only on the usb drive.
Both processes for adding copy the files, not move them. They have been added (unless you see a specific error message which you need to quote exactly here or we don't know what it is) but if you want them gone from the drive you need to drag those copies to the trash.
I know it is making a copy. I've done this many times on Windows and on Mac, but this time it isn't doing anything. The animation shows the file going right back to the thumb drive file, and no mention of the song shows up in I Tunes. Maybe I have to change some setting somewhere but neither the dragging or using the OPEN button on the Add to Library does anything.
Are you sure the drive isn't locked with the little switch on the side?
The drive doesn't have a switch. It is a drive I keep in my car to play the songs on my sound system in the car. I have copied it to other drives so my wife can also play the songs in her car's drive. But it just won't copy to I Tunes.
Odd, every single one of the 6 thumb drives I own, plus my 8 SD cards, all have a switch of some sort, be it very tiny.
Bouncing back means either you do not have permission to do the action (such as a locked file), or the format of the file is incompatible with the action (such as adding Windows Media files to Mac iTunes).
You are exactly right. Originally the tunes came from my CDs onto Windows Media Player and from there onto the USB thumb drive which I put in my car. I had used this drive before to put the tunes on Sonos. I can't imagine why they can't go in I Tunes. Maybe I need to get a different program to play them.
What format files? Mp3s and some other formats will play under either. WMA is specific to Windows and will play on Mac only outside of iTunes and only with special software such as VLC or Flip4Mac.
