Q: photostream question new Photos Program

I am now thoroughly confused.  In iPhoto 9, it used to be you could choose which photo to send to Photostream.  I only allowed photos taken on my mobile devices to go to Photostream.  No need to send photos imported into iPhoto to go. They were on the computer for editing purposes.

The new Photos program does not give you that choice. So am I to assume that all photos I import from my camera will now go to Photostream as well?

Question number two:  My upgrade went fine.  None of my old iphoto pictures went to photostream.  I cannot say the same for my second computer.

Can you explain what photos from the computer once photostream is enabled go to photostream.  As you can imagine for large libraries this will overwhelm the phone.

Thanks,

Debbie

That is unfortunately true.  When you enable My Photo Stream for a Photos Library, you enable automatic upload as well as automatic download. It is all or nothing.

My work-around is to enable My Photo Stream for an Aperture/iPhoto Library to download from my mobile devices, but not in Photos. Occasionally I will copy the new photo stream photos from the Aperture library to my Photos library.

My Photo Stream will upload new photos to iCloud, not photos that are already on the device.   My Photo Stream FAQ - Apple Support

Thank you.  I will try and manage with one photo program.

Not really wanting to go back and forth.

UGH.  I love when Apple makes these decisions for me.

That I understand.  But Photos is meant to be used with iCloud Photo Library, and then you do not really need My Photo Stream any longer. If you do not want to use iCloud Photo Library, then iPhoto is still the more versatile application than the new Photos.

That is interesting.  The downside is that most people will not understand that and more importantly for those that did not upgrade iPhoto, you can only upgrade to Photos.  Furthermore, no new computer has iPhoto leaving you with only Photos.

Icloud Photo Library is a great idea for small Libraries and those that want to incur the cost.  That is not everyone.

Another interesting idea is more than one library.  Again not for the simple user.
