My iMac is making some sound once in a while. However, I see no visible sign on screen. Each member of my family usually just leave the account logged in and switch users whenever the next person use the computer. So I have no idea if the sound comes from a background app that is still running in the other account or it is from my current log-in session. The noise sounds like a stone is dropped into a pond of water. It cames at random intervals, some times as frequent as every a minute or two.
How can I trace it down?
Thanks in advance.
20" 2.1GHz iMac G5 iSight, Sage iMac G3, PowerMac 7600, 128K original Mac,
Mac OS X (10.4.2),
500G HD, 1.5 Gig RAM, iPod 20G
Try this: System Preferences > Sound > Sound Effects... you chouls get a window that shows the different 'defualt or alert' sounds the Mac can make, you can click on each one to see if it's in there. I tried the one called "Submarine" and it does have a slight stone dropped into the pond thing but how knows... you can also UNCHECK all the options and that should stop the alerts
Good luck, Rick

In addition to what Rick suggests, and I don't know if this would work, you could check your Activity Monitor and see what registers or changes when the sound is being made.
